Giving a gift of peaceGlendale artist’s painting of Jesus is presented to Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Jerusalem.By Joyce RudolphPublished: Last Updated Tuesday, June 9, 2009 10:05 PM PDT Micheline E. Abounassar is hoping to spread peace and love around the world with her paintings — starting with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
A copy of her oil painting, “The Savior,” which depicts Jesus Christ, is on her website. Religious officials in Jerusalem saw it there and contacted the Glendale artist.
“They liked it so much and thought is was a great gift for His Holiness,” Abounassar said, who goes by Micha. “And Pope Benedict has a book about Jesus of Nazareth and his spokesman thought my painting depicted the one in his book.”
The painting, a giclee print on archival canvas, was presented to the pope during his visit to Jerusalem on May 12 by Wadie Abunassar, media coordinator of the Pope’s Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
“The pope just said ‘thank you’ and stood for a moment of respect in front of the ‘Savior’ painting,” Abunassar said in an e-mail.
Abounassar said she is extremely moved by the honor.
“It’s amazing,” she said. “It’s something I’ve worked for in my life. It’s really something amazing for me. I couldn’t believe it. It’s a really big honor.”
Micha asked to make the print giclees sizes 22-by-28, to a size of a real human figure illusion, which were reproduced with Micha's help from the original with a high-resolution digital scan back.
Graham said he was very impressed with the painting.
“I loved it,” he said. “I’m blown away with it. It’s an absolutely stunning piece.” It was also quite a thrill knowing the pope was the first to receive a print of it, he added.
“When I saw the photo on the website, I e-mailed her to congratulate her and said, ‘Your family must be proud of you ,’” he said.
Abounassar, 28, first received recognition for her artwork when she was 5, winning first place in her kindergarten class in Lebanon.
She drew a church with a nun and people going to pray on one side of the paper and people who were playing and not going to church on the other side.
The nun was carrying a rosary with people walking behind her.
“I was trying to inspire others to go to church,” Abounassar said. “They gave me gifts — books and coloring pencils and a rosary. I was carrying so many gifts, I was so small you couldn’t see me.”
Her teacher asked her parents to come in to meet with her and urged them to support her artistic talent, which they continue to do, she said.
In her painting of “The Savior,” she said people see what they want to see in it.
“I was trying to portray love and peace for humanity,” Abounassar said.
“It’s showing love to everyone. His eyes are blue interpreting sky and ocean, and showing how he cried so much.”
The glow on his complexion shows he’s human, and not human, she added.
“He’s more like God,” she said. “You can touch and feel him and follow his words and his message of love to humanity.”
She is now painting the Virgin Mary for the Mary of Nazareth Project, an international center in Nazareth that is in the planning stages, Abounassar said.
“I’m honored,” she said.
“I have a passion for Jesus and Mary and the way I paint them, I want them to look real from my heart. I want to inspire hope and love and peace for everyone.” Painting the Savior took Micha over 300 hours in oil painting realism&details... The 46th Annual National Apostolate of Maronites Convention in Los Angeles, California, is quickly approaching, and I hope you are all counting down the days to this important event. During the first NAM Convention that was held in Washington, D.C., during May 1964 I was ordained by Bishop Francis M Zayek. Now forty-six years later we continue to celebrate our Maronite faith and heritage. Even though we are removed from the land of our origin, we carry Lebanon and the Middle East in our hearts and celebrating it together each year keeps us connected to one another. During this time, we have grown and expanded to reach out to many people welcoming them into our Church. The Maronite community has come together each year from all over the United States to celebrate as one family. This year is no different but it is a little more special. We are being joined by our extended family across the globe. His Eminence Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Mr. Carlos Slim Helu, entrepreneur and businessman from Mexico, and Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood are among our esteemed guests who will be joining us on this momentous occasion along with religious and civic dignitaries, city officials and a delegate from Lebanon as well. I urge you all to follow the star to the City of Angels in order to attend the Convention this year. Let us come together to celebrate being Maronites. Our ancestors immigrated to this country seeking a better life, but they never lost touch with their heritage. It is now up to us to hand down our history and traditions to the future generations. We are alive thanks to the grace of God and its work in our midst. St. Maron, Founder and Patron of the Maronite Church. Know that Bishop Gregory and I are keeping you in our thoughts and in our prayers. We hope to see you all in July. With every best wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. The decree was made public on May 12 and signed by Cardinal James Francis Stafford and Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, respectively Penitentiary Major and Regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary. The Year for Priests marks the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean Marie Vianney, also knows as the Curé de Ars. The decree noted that Benedict XVI will preside at the opening liturgy June 19, the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, "a day of priestly sanctification." He will celebrate vespers before the relics of the saint, brought to Rome for the occasion by the Bishop of the French Diocese of Belley-Ars. The Year will end in St. Peter's Square, in the presence of priests from all over the world "who will renew their faithfulness to Christ and their bonds of fraternity." For priests, the plenary indulgence can be gained by praying lauds or vespers before the Blessed Sacrament exposed to public adoration or in the tabernacle. They must also "offer themselves with a ready and generous heart for the celebration of the sacraments, especially the sacrament of penance." The plenary indulgence, which under current norms must be accompanied by sacramental confession, the Eucharist and praying for the intentions of the Pope, can also be applied to deceased priests. Priests are granted a partial indulgence, also applicable to deceased priests, every time they "devotedly recite the prayers duly approved to lead a saintly life and to carry out the duties entrusted to them." For the faithful, a plenary indulgence can be obtained on the opening and closing days of the Year for Priests, on the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean-Marie Vianney, on the first Thursday of the month, or on any other day established by the ordinaries of particular places for the good of the faithful. To obtain the indulgence the faithful must attend Mass in an oratory or Church and offer prayers to "Jesus Christ, supreme and eternal Priest, for the priests of the Church, or perform any good work to sanctify and mould them to his heart." The conditions for the faithful for earning a plenary indulgence are to have gone to confession and prayed for the intentions of the Pope. The elderly, the sick, and all those who for any legitimate reason are unable to leave their homes may obtain the plenary indulgence if, with the intention of observing the usual three conditions as soon as they can, "on the days concerned, they pray for the sanctification of priests and offer their sickness and suffering to God through Mary, Queen of the Apostles." A partial indulgence is offered to the faithful when they repeat five times the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, or any other duly approved prayer "in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to ask that priests maintain purity and sanctity of life." (Zenit.org, May 12, 2009) . Pray a Lot and Well, Pope Urges Priests
P ope Benedict XVI is encouraging priests to pray a lot and pray well, saying that in this way they will be increasingly united to Christ. The Pope made this invitation on May 3 when he ordained nineteen new priests for the Diocese of Rome at a Mass held in St. Peter's Basilica. The Holy Father encouraged them to live a life of total surrender to God, like that of the apostles who changed the course of history proclaiming salvation in the name of Christ. "The disciple, and especially the apostle, experiences the same joy of Jesus in knowing the name and face of the Father; and he shares as well his same sorrow at seeing that God is not known, that his love is not reciprocated," the Pontiff said. He added: "On one hand, we exclaim as John did in his First Letter: 'See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are.' And on the other hand, bitterly we attest: 'The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him' (1 John 3:1). "It is true, and we priests know this from experience: The 'world,' in the sense that John uses the word, does not understand the Christian, does not understand the ministers of the Gospel -- in part, because in fact it does not know God and in part, because it does not want to know him." Trapped
Nevertheless, Benedict XVI cautioned, the "world" also ensnares the Church, "contaminating its members and even the ordained ministers." This world, he explained, "is a mentality, a way of thinking and living that can contaminate even the Church, and in fact does contaminate it, and therefore demands constant vigilance and purification." "We are 'in' the world and we run the risk of also being 'of' the world," the Pope added. "And in fact, sometimes we are." Prayer, he said, is the way to reach sanctity and a complete surrender to God, "above all, in the holy Mass of each day." "The Eucharistic celebration is the greatest and highest act of prayer and constitutes the center and the fount from which the other forms of prayer receive their 'sap': the Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharistic adoration, lectio divina, the holy rosary, meditation," the Holy Father stated. "The priest who prays a lot and prays well becomes ever more detached from himself and ever more united to Jesus, the Good Shepherd and Servant of his brothers," he went on. "In conformity with him, the priest too 'gives his life' for the sheep who have been entrusted to him" (Zenit.org, May 3, 2009). .

Winner of the 2007-2008 “best baseball player award” of the Major League Baseball, Alex Rodriguez commended the new sports center as well as the fact that Carlos Slim contributed with the necessary resources to build this center; he looked really astonished with the facilities and he explained to all his little fans that when he was a child he didn’t have the opportunity to practice baseball in so amazing field. The sport center Centro Deportivo Bicentenario is built on what was known as the Bordo de Xochiaca city dump, at the east of Mexico City in the municipality known as Netzahualcoyotl in a site of about 600 thousand square meters. This huge project is considered an environmental rescue. The vast facilities of this sports center offers the people who lives in the area a way to practice sports without charge as it has 25 soccer fields, four tennis courts, four basketball courts, four volleyball courts, two football fields and two baseball fields. Moreover, it is going to be self-maintainable as it will recover more than 5 million liters of water per year through its four lagoons and it will produce 5 thousand permanent jobs. This humongous project will include along with sports center, a shopping mall, a university, a technology school, hospitals and it will be known as Ciudad Jardin Bicentenario.

In an effort to do something for Mexico, the Asociación de Superación por México (Association for the Improvement of México) was born in 1980. Thus, the ASUME, human development program began. It is based on three issues:
- Constant improvement. There are no limits or excuses to trying to be a little bit better today than yesterday.
- Competition. You should compete with yourself and not with others because if I compare myself to others, either I get a complex or I do not improve.
- Balanced improvement: in each one of the following eight areas (physical, economic, aesthetic, intellectual, emotional, social, moral and spiritual), and set goals for each one.
Our goal: Be better yourself so that you can improve your environment. Goal: Change society by changing man. Through on-going improvement ASUME A.C., founded on the identification and acting with values, tries to educate men and women of peace, who are responsible, happy and committed with themselves and their families, their work and México.

Artist lives a religious experience
Her painting, ‘The Savior,’ was given to Pope Benedict XVI to be displayed at the Vatican.By Melanie HickenPublished: Last Updated Wednesday, July 15, 2009 10:00 PM PDT SOUTH GLENDALE — Sitting across from the painting that started it all, local artist Micheline Abounassar is overwhelmed by her recent fame.
Her oil painting “The Savior,” a haunting depiction of the face of Jesus Christ coming out of the darkness, caught the attention of religious officials in Jerusalem who saw it on her website.
The officials contacted the 28-year-old artist, who goes by Micha, who donated a copy to be presented to Pope Benedict XVI during his May 12 visit to Jerusalem to be displayed at the Vatican.
“There’s no words,” she said Wednesday. “The Vatican is an artist’s dream. It’s the biggest honor.”
Since word spread of the Pope’s blessing of her painting, Abounassar’s life has become a blur of phone calls, events and interviews. She has been contacted by numerous religious officials inviting her to present copies of “The Savior” at multiple religious events and has been featured in articles and television interviews in California and the Middle East.
“From that day, May 12, to now, we keep moving from one event to another,” said her father, Edward. “And there are more to come.”
Today, she is giving a presentation of her experience to the city’s Arts & Culture Commission, who will commend her for the attention she has brought to the Glendale art scene.
“It’s great,” said Commissioner Steve Lee. “It shows that Glendale is in the forefront of the arts movement. My personal feeling is there are a lot of hidden artists in Glendale that we aren’t seeing right off-hand.”
While she has donated the paintings to the various religious organizations, her recent notoriety has helped her sell several copies as well. She is especially proud of a check from Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese millionaire and ambassador of St. Lucia to the Holy See, who purchased a copy of the painting for Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican businessman and philanthropist who, with a reported net worth of about $35 billion, is the third richest man in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
She has also been commissioned to paint the Virgin Mary for the Mary of Nazareth Project, an international center in Nazareth that is in the planning stages.
Near her painting supplies, she keeps a battered Manila envelope covered in scribbled phone numbers and e-mail addresses of people who have contacted her. It’s filled with business cards and notes from those she’s met.
Her father, who sits nearby, couldn’t help but boast.
“She is a naturally born artist,” he said. “When she started in school it was really amazing. We always encouraged her.”
As a young girl growing up in Lebanon, she was surrounded by churches, so religious paintings have come naturally, she said. Her first painting, which she created as a 5-year-old kindergarten student, was of a church.
Modest and soft spoken, she said she is in awe of the recent accolades and attention that have been heaped upon her.
“She became an overnight sensation,” said Ripsime Marashian, the city’s liaison to the Arts & Culture Commission. “She’s been overwhelmed.”
Marashian said the attention can be very useful for the career of a young artist. “It is usually very hard to get this kind of publicity,” she said.
For Abounassar, the most memorable moments have been the emotional reactions people have had to her painting. People have gasped and cried when her painting is revealed, she said.
“I’ve got chills thinking about it,” she said. “It was something out of this world.”
